Epiphany

Sometimes it takes an external viewer's eye to define something that is under our own vision. Sometimes putting together some keywords and giving them a position in a sentence is a very important step to self development. So it happened that this weekend has been quite pregnant with information and analysis, culminating with an epiphany yesterday afternoon.

It all started with two simple things: from one side the almost incomprehensible comments to our photography coming from a photographer and from the other side the comments of some friends, who spent some time looking at our photos. Initially neither of those made very much sense, or at least they were simple comments/criticism to our style, but then Fabiana and I had the time to think about them, analyse them and we managed to gather a deeper, more complex meaning.

From one side we discovered that one of our strengths, being able to capture the "essence" of a human being, is also one of our flaws. Our editorial shots are focussed on the person, not on a product, they show the human being behind the clothing, not the clothing itself. This was a hell of a discovery and it left some deep questions in us, but still understanding this limitation allowed us to plan our future moves. From another side we were able to see some differences between Fabiana's and my styles, something that took a completely external eye to see and underline. The subtle differences in how we pose models and how the models respond to our direction is at various levels, levels that we still have to discover, but that in some ways opened my eyes.

So, what did these things show us? They make us think deeply about our future as photographers, they make us take some directions for the immediate future in order to move away from stagnation and into a new development of our skills. It made us understand that we would probably need a little bit of mentoring.

I believe you can expect few changes in the coming months, a redevelopment of our portfolio, a more strong approach to our photography and some tests in directions we did not take before. Yes, self analysis is always a very important part if you want to grow, and I believe this weekend was one of those moment where Fabiana and I grew a lot: now it is the time to translate this epiphany into our new us.

this is beautiful photo and very interesting article, Carlo! though i guess i would find difficulties to stress more on the dress that a person. Certainly at this shot i can see first the light on the girl and then beautiful background but not her dress;-) but that is why i like it actually:-)

    wish you luck in selfdiscovery!

Spesso bellezza e malinconia camminano insieme. L’ho pensato anche vedendo questo scatto. Raffinato, curato in ogni dettaglio.
Non può non colpirmi il suo sguardo… perso chissà dove.

Great work. Is there something in the foreground blocking the view at the bottom of the frame?

Seen next to a fellow photo of the group "Utata". (?)

From the profile, she kind of reminds me of the Australian actress, Rose Byrne. Compliments on the black and white.

The romantic and opulent life on the Orient Express evoked rather well I think.

I agree you have to keep thinking about who and where you photographically. This is a lovely picture but it does seem to me, now that you mention it, to be more an environmental portrait than a fashion shot. By the way, I like gridded light but feel uncormfortable that there is such a sharp cut-off just at the ankle.

Lovely photo, especially love the ‘idea’ behind it and composition.

I personally would have been tempted to take out the window marks, and perhaps even dumb-down the inside marking on the windows that w/the B&W conversion becomes a little distracting. I also have to say the wonky lampshade would have driven me crazy!

Good work my friend, definitely one for the portfolio :)
