Breaking the rules: an editorial story

We are still looking for the way for expressing our creativity, our true style in the best way. We are still bound too much to some rules that should be broken to reveal who we are as photographers. Looking at my street works, I can see the broken pieces of those boundaries, and beneath them I can see my style, my personal approach. There may be many ways of doing it, but I know only one: practice and the interest of going away from the path drawn by others. We are The Round Peg [in the square hole], so our approach is not something that should come unnoticed, is it?

This time, in order to give me some inspiration, I follow a friend's advice and I scripted an editorial story, a sort of film in my head. I feel that something from the script has been lost in the translation to images, but I think my assumption was that a video would have explained few things more clearly. Something I definitely need to learn.

Scripting the session has been an interesting attempt, even if I had the tendency to stick too much to it, losing focus on the main target of the day: the photos. I feel that if I had to do it again, I would either script it in a more flexible way, or I would avoid taking photos, as doing both messes the direction or the photography part.

The team, Elina, Caterina and Yvonne, was fabulous, confident and... simply perfect! As always the connection between Fabiana and me was great and I am very happy of the photos we were able to create during the evening.

The Team Photographers: Carlo and Fabiana Nicora Make Up Artist: Yvonne Mazurkiewicz Hair Stylist: Caterina Maiolini Models: Elina Kras

This time I was not able to create a video of the story, as I was more focussed on the photography part of it, but it has been a great experience I need to reproduce very soon.

One of the things I was able to identify is the lack of an editorial style in the post-processing of the photos. I see this as a lack of consistency, even if I like every photo individually, I still feel that to narrate a story the language should not be changed. Another lesson learned!

fascinating blog as usual – incidentally shooting stills as a storyboard for a video was the first exercise on BBC craft training courses – then everything had to be shot 4×3 landscape, no cropping and on slide film – now it would be 16×9 which imposes greater limits on where you can shoot ;-)

another contact plans out many, many one-off street shots. Puts a lot of work into a single image he wants to capture. I think the story approach is necessary with models and a series. I have a story in my mind when I view the blog post! Great work my friend!

Next time, don’t stand her up!
:) Hope all is well. I feel like I owe you an email, but suffice to say that we think of you all and our house is open to you.
