Do you know how to use those heavy, powerful studio lights, but you feel that even the white seamless background is becoming grey?

Do you look at your model thinking that you would love to see her sitting on a bench in the middle of a park, using the same lights you are used to deal with in a studio?

Would you like to transform the interesting streets of your city in your studio?

If so, you probably feel the need to try something different from the confined environment of a studio and you might find a “strobist” course in the streets of London extremely useful!

What will you learn from this workshop?

At the end of the “Shaping Locations” workshop you will be able to take your camera and use small portable flashes (strobes) as if you were in a studio. You will be confident enough to mount your umbrella in Piccadilly Circus portraying your subject in the real environment.

This workshop will be based on experiencing the studio portraiture far from an aseptic white seamless, bringing it in the heart of the pulsing streets of the city.

And it will be a lot FUN!

What are the prerequisite for this workshop?

If you will join us in this open-air workshop, we expect you to be confident with the variables of exposure. We expect you to know the theory of light.

If you do not know it you can roll in our Shaping Lights Workshop, as it will teach you all the basis of lighting photography and how to use off camera flash.

What does this workshop cover?

We believe that “Practice makes perfect”, therefore we have structured our one day workshop in location lighting in two parts, one theoretical and one practical.

  • Gears: inexpensive tools to recreate studio lights
  • Gears: Differences between studio light and small flashes
  • People: how to manage them
  • People: how to light them
  • Background: bring something inside your frame
  • Lights and Shadows: why they are both important and how to use them
  • Rules of Photography (and how to bend them)

What to bring

This workshop has a practical approach therefore the best thing you can bring along, apart from your brain and your attention, is your camera. If your DSLR comes only with a kit lens, I would suggest you to buy an inexpensive 50mm f/1.8; both Canon and Nikon have a cheap one.

If you are interested in our Shaping Locations Workshop and want to participate, book a place or just enquire about it, send us an email!
